A great way to save money in Iceland is to avoid fines in Iceland when parking. One thing you don’t want as a souvenir from Iceland is ticket’s and fines. Always check for signs when parking in Iceland that indicate whether the parking is free or not. Read ahead and be prepared so you can relax and enjoy your holiday without incurring extra costs.  The common fines that people get in iceland are these:

  1.  Parking fines
  2. Toll fines 
  3.  Off road driving
  4. Illegal parking (e.g. road side or disabled parking)
  5. Overnight camping outside of camsites

Get the number right

A common mistake that leads to fines is paying for the wrong car. This happens either by mistake or by confusing numbers and letter´s, namely the zeros and the O’s. The Icelandic number plate is comprised of three letters first and the followed by two numbers.

Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel fee

There is currently one tunnel in Iceland where you have to pay a tunnel fee. Vaðlarheiðargöng in north Iceland. There is no booth to pay so you need to make sure to pay online at tunnel.is. You can pay in 24 hours advance or 24 hours after.

Reykjavík

Parking in Reykjavík 

If you are visiting downtown Reykjavík, make sure you check if you need to pay for the parking spot. 

There are 4 parking zones in Reykjavík P1, P2 P3 and P4. There are signs indicating which zone you are inn. You can also use the apps to find out which zone your parking lot belongs to and what rate.

The easiest way to check is using the parking apps such as Parka or Easypark.

These apps also work in the parking garages operated by the city.

 

 

Parking in Akureyri

In downtown Akureyri there is charged for parking. You can use the same apps as in Reykjavík, Parka and Easypay.

When in Akureyri, make sure to check out the red lights!

Airports

Airports in Iceland charge for parkin through Autopay. If you need to park at the airport in your rental car (This does not apply to pick up or return of the rental car) you can go through the Isavia website and choose the airport and pay.  Here is a link for Keflavik Aiport.

Camping sites in Iceland

Camping outside designated campsites in Iceland is illegal so make sure you find a designated campsite to spend the night to save money on fines. Luckily there are campsites all over Iceland where you can camp for the night.
